Recipe: Chai tea
Chai tea is a traditional Indian drink made from black tea, milk and spices. It has a non-traditional taste and warms you nicely in the winter months. A number of shops offer it in sachets, but home-made masala chai is unbeatable.
Chai tea is great for all tea lovers and for children – the caffeine content is negligible. If you want to drink it unsweetened, it is a good option when you are on a diet.
What will we need to prepare it?
The basis of masala chai is black tea. And it is certainly true that loose tea is better than teabags. The second necessary ingredient is milk. Best is semi-skimmed, but whole milk won’t do any harm. And the typical taste of this oriental drink is completed by the mixture of spices, where cardamon is king.
Ingredients:
· 5 cardamon pods
· 7 teaspoons of black tea
· 5 cloves
· 1 whole cinnamon stick
· 1 vanilla pod
· 1 teaspoon of ginger (fresh is better, finely chopped)
· 1 teaspoon of aniseed
· 1 litre of water
· 3/4 litre of milk
· Sugar or honey as a sweetener
Preparation:
Preparation is very simple. We pour all the water and put all the spices into a pot. As soon as the water starts to boil, we add the tea leaves and bring to the boil. In the end we turn the flame down and slowly pour in the milk. We let the finished masala chai stand for a few minutes. And in the end we sieve the drink and serve in cups.
We can serve it alone or as the final drink of the evening with sweets or desserts.
